You have (Your child has) been selected to participate in a research study being conducted as part of a Master's project at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. The purpose of this project is to study how religious organizations contribute to the cultural diversity of the Greater Houston Area and what cultural characteristics distinguish their members from their spiritual counterparts.
Participation in the study requires that you (your child) be interviewed and/or photographed by the investigator (Leslie Carolyn Johnson). The study will cover a period of 12 months but your participation will only be needed for a period of approximately one to 14 weeks, depending on your (your child's) degree of participation. (For example, the amount of time needed for a child to prepare for a bar mitzvah or for a bride to prepare for her wedding ceremony will dictate the length of time of participation.)
There are no foreseeable risks in your participation. You may withdraw from the study at any time, without penalty. Written information collected as part of this study will be kept entirely confidential, and will be reported only in summary form to protect the privacy of the subject. However, because this is a visual project, it may not always be possible to guarantee complete subject anonymity. Subjects can elect at any time to exclude themselves from any photographic session during the project.
This research offers you (your child) the opportunity to share your religious activities and experiences with people in other communities, thereby creating an atmosphere of enlightenment, understanding and acceptance. Your (your child's) participation will greatly contribute to the investigator's efforts which will culminate in a photographic exhibition at the UHCL campus. All participants and interested persons are cordially invited to attend the opening reception and visit the exhibit while it is on display.
